As roads, bridges and cellular networks fail, Starlink’s offer raises a bigger question: Is Nepal prepared to deploy satellite communication when disaster strikes?

Amid the crisis, Starlink has announced that it is ready to support Nepal by deploying Starlink kits and providing free emergency internet service, working with the Government of Nepal and humanitarian organizations as soon as it receives the necessary authorization.
In a recent statement, Starlink expressed solidarity with people affected by the catastrophic floods in Nepal and the Tibet border region. The company said it was prepared to provide assistance to the government and humanitarian partners.
Starlink also highlighted the importance of satellite-based communication when conventional infrastructure fails.
When roads, bridges and cellular networks are damaged or completely cut off, satellite internet can provide an alternative communication channel for rescue teams, medical personnel and families trying to reach people who remain missing or stranded.
According to Starlink, with a power source and a clear view of the sky, a Starlink kit can establish high-speed, low-latency internet within minutes.

A New Dimension to Nepal’s Disaster-Communication Debate
The announcement comes at a critical time for Nepal, where floods and landslides can rapidly damage roads, bridges, power infrastructure, mobile towers and fiber-optic networks.
The latest offer raises an important question: Is Nepal sufficiently prepared to maintain communications when its conventional networks go down?
For emergency responders, communication is not simply about internet access. It can determine how quickly rescue teams coordinate operations, how medical teams receive information and how families locate missing relatives.
This makes satellite communication potentially valuable as an emergency backup network, particularly in remote and disaster-hit areas where restoring fiber or mobile infrastructure can take considerable time.
Now, the Government’s Response Matters
Starlink has made its position clear: it says it is ready to provide kits and free service, subject to government authorization.
The next question is therefore whether Nepal can establish a rapid mechanism for approving and deploying such technology during emergencies.
Rather than viewing satellite internet only as a commercial service, Nepal could consider integrating satellite-based connectivity into its broader national disaster-response and emergency communication strategy.
The floods have damaged more than physical infrastructure. They have exposed the fragility of communication systems that depend heavily on roads, electricity, towers and fiber networks.
Starlink’s offer has therefore added a new dimension to Nepal’s disaster-communication debate.
The question is no longer simply whether the technology exists.
The real question is whether Nepal is prepared to use it when lives depend on communication.
