By Ashish Kumar Mandal, Kathmandu, Nepal : Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has pledged to strengthen governance, tackle corruption and improve public services as the country marked Constitution Day and National Day 2083.

Addressing the main ceremony in Kathmandu, Shah said the government remained committed to the Constitution’s principles of multiparty democracy, human rights, the rule of law, social justice and inclusive development.

Paying tribute to those killed in Nepal’s political movements and the recent Gen Z protests, Shah also expressed condolences to victims of the recent Rasuwa–Bhotekoshi floods and thanked national and international groups involved in rescue and relief operations.

Shah said corruption and impunity remained major challenges, while announcing measures aimed at maintaining political neutrality in the administration, promoting merit-based appointments and restructuring the public administration. He said cooperation among federal, provincial and local governments would remain important to national development.

The prime minister also highlighted artificial intelligence, digital technology, cybersecurity, innovation and startups as key areas for building a knowledge-based economy. He said the government would develop national digital infrastructure and expand the use of technology in public services.

On disaster management, Shah said Nepal needed to focus more on risk reduction and preparedness rather than responding only after disasters occur. He said the government would prioritize early-warning systems and strengthen disaster response capacity.

“This is the beginning, not the end,” Shah said, stressing that the Constitution must be implemented through transparent decisions, effective public services and accountable state institutions.

He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to implementing the Constitution and extended Constitution Day greetings to Nepalis at home and abroad.(photo : pmonepal)
