Janakpur: Chief Minister of Madhesh Province, Satish Kumar Singh, has expressed dissatisfaction over the slow progress of the Sunkoshi–Marin Diversion Project, stating that it has not moved forward at the expected pace.
CM Singh, accompanied by Minister for Physical Infrastructure Saroj Kumar Yadav and Minister for Energy, Irrigation, and Drinking Water Shesh Narayan Yadav, visited Khurkot for an on-site inspection of the project.

The project, considered a national pride initiative, is highly significant for meeting the irrigation needs of Madhesh Province. During the inspection, CM Singh held discussions with project officials regarding overall progress, structures, and remaining works.
According to the details presented by Senior Divisional Engineer Ashok Raj Gautam, while the first phase of tunnel construction has been completed, only 10 percent progress has been achieved in the remaining two phases. Despite 50 percent of the contract period having elapsed, the pace of work remains slow, raising concerns about the project’s timely completion.
After the inspection, CM Singh stated that the Sunkoshi–Marin Diversion could prove to be a “milestone” for the province’s irrigation sector. However, expressing serious concern over the current pace of work, he remarked that overall progress was unsatisfactory. He further committed to compiling a detailed report of the issues identified during the inspection and submitting it to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for necessary attention and action.
